In the heart of Minas Gerais, with its rolling mountains, lakes and rich farmland, lies the well known coffee growing region of Sul de Minas. One of the ecological niches in this region is on the slopes of the Serra do Pau d'Alho, between Monte Belo and Cabo Verde, where some of the most superb Brazilian coffees are produced.
Here, a small group of farmers, descendants of the first settlers in the region, have been planting and harvesting coffee at an altitude of between 1,000 and 1,200 meters since the end of the 18th century.
Scattered among the plantations are pockets of pristine forest that provide a habitat for many species of birds and a sizeable monkey population. These ecological factors combined with traditional farming methods maintained for over a century, have made this area a paradigm of diversified, sustainable farming.
This region is characterized by well drained soils of volcanic origin with a notable presence of clay, a temperate climate with a rainy season between October and March, along with a well-defined dry season during harvesting time, late April until August. Here are grown the coffees that Alfenas Café exports to the whole world, supplying the most discerning quality minded roasters.
The high latitude and well defined seasons give this coffee a naturally low caffeine content and gentle acidity making it a healthier drink. The careful processing methods used then give the coffee exquisite chocolate tones. Using strict quality control during all phases of production and processing, our cuppers select the best lots from our production for our demanding clients.
Alfenas Café has its headquarters at Fazenda Monte Alegre, at Monte Belo, Minas Gerais – MG, near our own coffee estates: Fazenda Lagoa in Monte Belo and Fazenda Santa Helena in Alfenas.
